Distributor or Dinosaur. Who will be the first to become extinct? In the age of the internet this is a question that begs to be asked.

After spending nearly 25 years as a distributor first and then a supplier for the last 17 years I can say without hesitation that the old school ASI Distributor/Supplier model has never been more in jeopardy. Here is why!

  1. The original ASI concept did not take into account the internet. In many ways, todays ASI approach to the business is still firmly rooted in the world of the printed catalog and faxed in orders. This may suit some distributors but take these facts into account. (according to ASI June 2017)

“The average distributor age is 57 while the average age of their end user is now under 40!”

2. This fact alone means the following…..the end user grew up with the internet and is most familiar with this mode of shopping while the average distributor finds the net “unfamiliar and overwhelming.”

“In short this means that the end user is looking for an online retail type experience to shop for their swag”

3. The end user is now looking to social media (Pinterest, FB, Instagram etc) for their promo inspirations. They want something with their logo that they found in the online social media experience. In short they want trending ideas.

” Younger end users don’t want what their predecessors ordered, even if it worked as a marketing giveaway. They want new and trending!”

4. New and Trending does NOT fit the typical ASI supplier. Suppliers typically wait until 2 things happen…A) the product is proven to be of interest to the end user and B) they can bring in boatloads of them for inventory. This paradigm is flawed. It means one thing.

“By the time a typical Supplier has a trending product on their shelves the trend is over. Think about this, there is an estimated 2 million fidget spinners in stock in the top 10 suppliers warehouses in the USA. Is your end user still asking for these? NOT!”

5. How does a Distibutor beat this old style of business and get ahead of the curve and ahead of their clients desires? Simple.

“Stop doing the same old thing and expect a different result. If your promo suggestions to the end user are not being bought, suggesting it again and again will not work any better!”

 

Here’s what we suggest to stem the tide of Distributor extinction.

 

  1. Look for non conforming suppliers. Suppliers like www.PromoCrunch.com and www.PromoMotive.com are always bringing in new and unusual ideas direct from the factory to the distributor. This means they are not stuck with stale-dated inventory that they have to clear out and that no one wants. It also means that you are far more likely to find ideas that your customer actually wants.
  2. Reconsider dealing with a supplier who imports directly from China to your door. Today the minimums are lower and the speed of delivery is faster. Why pay for USA inventory especially if the idea becomes stale-dated.

If you’re paying set up fees you’re getting ripped off.

I am a long-time promotional products supplier and I am shocked that people are still charging and still paying for set-ups, run charges, color matches etc.

Stop it Now!

Let me let you in on a secret.

As a supplier of swag who sells to distributors I am going to tell you now that you should never, ever, pay for set ups, run charges etc. It is a scam.

Issue #1

When was the last time you bought blanks and decorated them yourselves? Never. You always want it logo’d!

Issue #2

If issue #1 is true then why don’t suppliers just price out the product with a logo on it? They already know you’re going to want it with a logo!

Issue #3

Here’s where the suppliers who charge will say, “well…there’s a cost difference for 1,2,3 or 4 colors.” I say Bullshit!

I tell you this, the cost difference is so small that if a supplier can’t charge you an all inclusive logo cost or better yet an all inclusive product with logo cost regardless of how many colors you need then they are not very informed or  are playing the game as seen in the next issue, #4.

Issue #4

Suppliers who charge run fees, color matching etc. do this for 2 reasons…..1 to make more money and 2 to make their product appear less expensive than it really is!

Confusion to the client. (yes I know I used 4 twice…thought I would confuse you) Not only are these charges unnecessarily extra but they are coded on idiotic numerals like a G! This is just confusing and a time-waster.

Issue #5

Some charges are real and should be charged. When there is a real cost and its a significant one, go ahead and charge it. On our custom shaped flash drives for instance we pay $80 to the factory in China for the mold. Guess what, we charge our customers $80. I think that’s fair.

Issue #6

Make it easy on the customer. I can’t tell you how many clients I have spoken with who say they spend about 20 minutes costing out a job! 20 Minutes! Are you nuts!

The costing of the job should take 1 minute, the other 19 minutes you should be selling something else, high-fiving the guy in the cubicle next to you or rooting around on YouTube. You should get from the supplier a price. one, all inclusive price, you then would do your mark up on it and send it to the end user. Badda bing badda boom, done!

And on that note ,if you are sending a quote to customers with run charges, color matches etc….How do you think they feel about that?

In closing, I am sure there will be some of those out there who think I am nuts on this issue and that it is ok for all of these ridiculous charges. To you I say the following………You are wrong!

 

Below is an example of how it should be. Coded on a C to include shipping to your door and 1,2, 3 or even 4 color process logo. No extra charges! How easy does that make it!

Stop Paying Too Much for Promo

Attention Promotional Products Distributors. Why are you paying too much for your Promotional Products?

Now that the world of business is much smaller, Chinese factory’s are faster and international freight is less expensive why do you continue to buy your promotional products the old-fashioned and expensive way?

Overpaying Problem #1

Inventory in a big Stateside warehouse is a bad idea! The old days when buying in bulk from China and shipping to a central US warehouse make no sense any more. Here are the reasons.

A) Clients want fresh ideas. Buyers are less and less ordering repeats of the old tried and trues! The days when people ordered the same T-shirt/Mug and got the same imprint on them each April ARE MOSTLY OVER! With this fact in mind the idea that the best way to buy both on price and innovation is to buy from some giant warehouse is simply wrong. The reason are complex but I will try to explain.

B) If clients want new ideas all the time (which they do) then the old style swag (ie pens/mugs/T’s) sits on the warehouse shelf unsold. Ask yourself this…How many Fidget Spinners are on suppliers shelves NOT SELLING? 

C) When a slow selling inventory product goes unsold the cost of that unsold inventory gets placed upon more popular selling items. In short the best sellers carry additional costs to off-set the cost of slow sellers.

D) if you are buying from the same place as everyone else then you are selling at the same price as everyone else. If true, what is your competitive advantage? If you want to create a sale that stops your client from either shopping online or bidding you out, stop selling the same old thing as everyone else!
